Features

Felix has been in use since early 2006, and has accumulated the following features:

  • Easy to install and configure. Just run the setup and start the program
  • Runs on a low powered Windows machine with no particular hardware requirements. Felix typically occupies less than 5Mb of memory, so just about any machine running Windows XP or later will do.
  • Runs as a web server. You access it through a web browser or mobile phone just like any other web/wap site, so with a little bit of configuration in your router, you can access it from anywhere in the world. All configuration and management is through the web interface. The software can be remotely managed and upgraded via a browser.
  • Does not have a conventional window and does not occupy any screen space on the computer it runs on, other than an icon in the taskbar tray. So it does not necessarily need a dedicated machine.
  • Able to handle virtually any application. You can use it to monitor or control anything from garden watering to swimming pools, aquariums, lighting or heating systems.
  • Supports most of the relevant sensors and actuators in the Maxim 1-wire network, as well as the most popular types of interface to X10 devices. You can mix and match your system to get the best of both worlds, for example using 1-wire sensors to drive X10 power switches, or X10 remote controls to activate 1-wire switches. It’s completely up to you. And Felix’s architecture allows for more hardware types to be added in the future.
  • You can configure complex devices requiring complex calculations using one or more raw sensor values. Input data can be filtered and averaged, including special handling for circular data like wind direction.
  • Supports 1-wire hubs based on the DS2409 and automatically detects the 1-wire network topology.
  • Timers can be set to perform regular switching operations.
  • Powerful scripting facility allows you to configure really advanced automation. With proprietary control systems you never really know what algorithms are in use. With Felix, you write your own scripts that do exactly what you want.
  • You can build scripts to capture calibration constants, which can be used in device value calculations.
  • Saves all data to a SQLite database and displays it on graphs or tables.
  • Exports data in CSV, XML or SQL format.
  • Exports to Wunderground.
  • Built-in Dynamic DNS client.
  • Built-in system clock synchronisation client.
  • Detailed logging, customiseable to your requirements.
  • User Panels enable simplified operation by non-technical users.
  • The entire user interface is customiseable. You can customise the HTML templates, CSS, and images to suit your taste and requirements, and even submit a new “skin” for inclusion in the base product.
  • Unlike many free software products, Felix is fully documented. Every feature is fully described in the user guide, which also contains many practical tips and examples.
